How is the Universe winding down?
Hi Lenny,
Wait! What does "the universe is winding down" mean? I used to have a grasp on this, but it's been awhile, so please explain to me how "time" can be taken out of the equation for existence. This is really interesting stuff, but it takes some real brain-stretching to grasp. (regarding your response to "The Creation of the Universe"

Hi Yongae,
I'm glad to see you're investigating these things. Being an "aspiring disciple" is one of the most important tasks we have as Christians. Keep up the good work.
As to your question.. there is a law of physics called the Entropy law. It states that anything left to itself will become more disorganized and more random. Picture a closet or garage you may have. If you don't clean it out and put everything away, after a while it becomes cluttered and disorganized. The universe acts in the same way. A battery is energy that is organized; positive charges on one side and negative charges on the other. If you set that battery in a drawer or on a counter and never use it, it will eventually go dead all on its own. Even though there has been no drain on the battery, it still loses its charge to the environment.
We live in a universe that scientists say is expanding. As the stars rush away from each other, they are also slowing down in their speed. The sun will eventually burn out (as the hypothesis goes) and many stars have burned out with a brilliant flash. Taken together, all these things show that the universe is losing its order and its energy is becoming more randomly dispersed (in the form of heat) from its more organized state (motion or a sun, etc.) This is what I mean when I say the universe is winding down.
As to time, this becomes a more complicated explanation. We live in a world of 3+ dimensions. We can move up or down, back or forward, and side to side. These three dimensions most people recognize, but we move in another way that many do not realize is also a dimension. We move forward in time. We cannot say we live in a true four-dimensional existence, because we can only move forward in time and look back. We cannot look forward or move back. But we do still move in time, so we'll just say we live in 3 dimensions.
Einstein first showed how time was a physical property based on your mass and your speed. If you go faster, time slows down! This seems incredible, but the clocks on the space shuttle will run at a slower rate while it is orbiting the earth (though this difference is only fractions of a second). If you have more mass time also goes slower because it is affected by gravity.
God is outside of this space-time dimension altogether. Isaiah declares He is "the One who inhabits eternity (Isaiah 57:15)". God has no mass (He is a spirit) and no acceleration, therefore the formula for His time frame becomes irrelevant. He created time, so He is not bound by its constraints.
The best example of people in a space-time existence is like someone sitting on a curb watching a parade. We see things happen one at a time, in order. We don't know what is coming around the corner next. We see it and experience it, then the next float comes along and it is something entirely new. God is outside of time. It's like He's in a blimp that overlooks the entire parade. He can tell you what happened before and what's coming up next without any error because He sees it all at once. That is why God says "There is none like Me declaring the end from the beginning(Isaiah 46:10)." That is also why God uses prophecy as a way to test whether the things being said are really from Him. Deuteronomy 18:20-22 gives us a way to verify if it was God who really spoke... by seeing if He's 100% accurate in things to come.
I hope I've helped a little bit in your understanding of the concepts of time and the universe. They are really full courses of study in and of themselves. May God bless you as you continue to pursue His word.
